Juniper procumbin dormancy?

On Dec. 9th I received a Juniper Procumbins nana as a gift. It came from a 24 hr store, the pot was wrapped with shrink-wrap to keep moisture in. The tree was indoors under 24 hr light. however the lights are on the ceiling about 20 foot away from the tree, so I doubt the lights were doing any good. I brought it home and was placing it in the window to get light in the morning and moving it back to my dresser by noon to keep it out of the intense light. After observing the tree for a while, I have the watering schedule down to every forth day. I live in Michigan and its been in the teens outside temperature wise. I learned that the tree needs a dormancy period. the room the tree is in now stays 65f degrees - 70f degrees. My basement stays 55f degrees - 65f degrees, my garage is 20f degrees - 35f degrees. My question is; should I move the tree to the basement for a few weeks then to the garage till spring so it can go dormant? There is no sun in the basement, the garage gets some light filtered through the windows but not much. And if the tree doesn't get a dormancy period will it be ok till I can move it outside in the spring? Thank you for your help and taking the time to answer...

Unfortunately, your post made me cry.   I hope your tree is still alive.
First of all, the name is Juniperus procumbens 'Nana.' Japanese garden juniper.
Your tree should have been in the garage, but you can't put it there suddenly. The basement won't help. You are right that it should gradually be put into an appropriate location. Don't worry about light. If the tree isn't too big, remove all the holiday leftovers from your refrigerator   , remove any moss or dead twigs from your tree, put it in a plastic bag, and put it in the refrigerator until March. When the garage safely stays above freezing, you can transfer your tree to the garage.
Join the nearest bonsai club.

And Iris, your post made me laugh out loud - because I had penned and was about to post almost exactly the same thing. : 

Minus the fridge because I just can't conceive of a fridge empty enough to put so much as a mame in.  

Before I had my present setup, I have wintered small bonsai in the fridge. I got the idea from orchid growers in Manhattan apartments who successfully grow temperate orchids that require dormancy. And Khaimraj has a whole fridge just for that purpose.
Granted the custom is not widespread. I once dropped in on a meeting at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington (Zone 7). They were discussing wintering practices. I got up & told them about wintering bonsai in the fridge. The room exploded with howls. They had never heard of such a thing.

Don't want to hi-jack this -- but would like to remind everyone that much of the collection at the NC Arboretum goes into a large walk-in cooler in the winter. Check Arthur's postings.

Personally, I'd put the tree in the garage and make sure it doesn't dry out until spring. Put some snow on it so when it warms up it melts.

Thank you everyone for the response and suggestions. I was going to do the refrigerator thing, however the only refrigerator I could keep it in is in the garage and freezes everything   I tracked down a gentleman in my area who used to run a bonsai club here, unfortunately he closed the club due to lack of participation, but he still speaks at other clubs and is very involved with his own collection that he has had for 25 years. He told me to put the tree in the garage on the concrete floor and to cover it with a box, heat will come up through the floor and be trapped in the box so the tree doesn't freeze and a couple times a month he puts snow on it for water...also it will receive fresh air in the garage. I keep the four wheeler in the garage and the snow melts off the tires so I think it will work. I put the tree out there today, who I named Zed    So now I will wait till spring and temps rise above freezing. Until then I will continue to seek out knowledge as to best care for Zed... I have some kind of juniper growing in my yard I am going to study the forums as how to propagate clippings in the spring... Thank you for being here everybody
