Fertilize or not to fertilize? Empty Fertilize or not to fertilize?

Post  Todd Ellis Fri Jul 09, 2010 2:26 am

We have had a two weeks of 90 degree temps, and then this past week has been 100 degree temps. I have not fed my temperate trees thinking "its too hot!". Should I feed or not during temps like this? I am feeding my tropical trees now.
There seems to be mixed opinions among growers about this. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Todd Question

Fertilize or not to fertilize? Empty Fertilize or not to fertilize?

Hello Todd. I tend to feed through Spring, Summer and Autumn. I have heard that trees shut down on the hottest days but I'm not feeding or watering during the peak temperatures anyway.

Hot weather increases transpiration rates, fertilising at such times can increase the rate of salt movement from the roots into the leaves, causing marginal burn. Basically, lots of water is moved from the roots to the leaves to aid leaf cooling, salts collected by the roots are carried to the leaf and become concentrated at the edges of the leaf, eventually becoming toxic and causing cell death. It depends on the species of plant, but most salt sensitive plants are susceptible to this problem. If you must fertilise, reduce the concentration by half or two thirds to be safe.
