Time to re-pot my Fukien tree? Empty Time to re-pot my Fukien tree?

Post  rjoneslane Fri Jul 02, 2010 11:50 pm

Hi everyone...
I have a Fukien tea tree that is doing well. But....I think it might be time to repot. I got it about a month and a half ago as a gift, and it's in a small plastic "pot (really a container). There are a fair number of small rocks strewn throughout the soil, and the soil is solid enough that it is separating from the sides of the container (so when I water it, either the water tends to run down the sides or the rocks on the top layer prevent it from soaking in as well as it should). So I have a new pot, wire mesh, some wiring, and some new soil from my local bonsai nursery. The tree is purely indoors, so I'm not sure how the season timing would make a difference as to whether I repot it now or later. Any ideas...?

Yes, your plant definitely needs to be repotted. Please post a photo. However, I would bet that it is not ready for a bonsai pot. It would probably benefit from being grown in a large, shallow training pot, such as a bulb pan, for a year or two, to get some meat on its bones, so to speak.
And don't consider growing it indoors all year round. This is not a Ficus. After repotting, put it outdoors in the shade, & gradually into the sun. It may lose all its leaves from potting shock, but just don't overwater & it should come back. Leave it outdoors all summer until temperatures go almost to 40. In the winter it will need strong light, either a very sunny south window or under fluorescent lights 18 hours.
