Coast Redwood Grove from a burl? Empty Coast Redwood Grove from a burl?

Post  Ryan Mon Dec 27, 2010 6:57 pm

Hi everyone,

I don't know if anyone else received Will Hitz's book Gnarly Branches, Ancient ,Trees for Christmas like I did, or if anyone owns it, but there is an awesome grove of Coast Redwood I found in the book. It is found on page 165 and shows a picture of a Coast Redwood burl that had sprouted from the mother tree, then cut. I am very interested in attempting this. Burls from Coast Redwoods can be bought online. Then once the burl sprouts, I would like to cut it back to, say 5 trees, as shown in the picture. Has anyone ever attempted this, or even heard of it? If you do not own Will's book I HIGHLY recommend it. It is an incredible book. Thanks all,

Ryan

I don't know if everybody know's about this book also, but Bonsai Today Master' Series Junipers is also an awesome book. If you love junipers then you will love this one.

I've been told that these burls often don't really root; the sprouts are just from internal stored energy in the burl. It may also be the tendency of people who try this to fiddle and twist with the sprouts to see if they have rooted.

Along the Redwood Hwy. (route 199) and on the PCH (Pacific Coast Hwy. Rt. 101) you will see vendors selling sprouted Redwood burls. They are all kept in pans of water and will live as long as they are in water. The burls are formed by over production of dormant growth buds building up on top of each other. Redwoods are readily available around here so I've never messed with the burls. I have asked a few of the vendors, with varying results, some say sure they'll sprout roots and as many say they won't live outside of the pans of water. My best source for Redwoods is the Jonsteen Co. in Calif. at jonsteen.com. If anyone knows the bottom of this it's those folks.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I too have read that they can shoot out roots, and also that they cannot form roots. I have contacted Jonsteen to see what they say. I just may have to buy one to find out.

Anyone else have Will's book and know the tree I'm talking about?

G'day Folks...

I, as well, have Gnarly Branches, Ancient ,Trees...a marvelous book. It was gifted to me, an early and unexpected Christmas present, by Victrinia Ridgeway...who many of us on this forum know. She did about half of the photos for the book, and her husband Eric did the cover.

Mildly surprised was I that it took a guy from the UK (thank you Dave) to mention Dan Robinson, Bonsai Pioneer, as Will called him. And the book is a tribute to Dan.

Good read...great photos...and an excellant addition to anyone's library...

Pat...who's that stranger on the white horse riding off in all directions?

Ryan,

Redwood burl should give new roots but you should wait about two years before styling. You should treat it like a regular tree and fertilize from its first year or just feed hormones to it. its very easy ive heard.

Great thanks!

I will definitely attempt it, if I can get my hands on a burl. They seem very hard to come by, however......

Well I'm in California for the week, so I managed to buy a burl. I'll post pics when I get it home.
