Boring bugs.... Empty Boring bugs....

Post  matt addie Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:38 pm

Last night, when doing my usual rounds in the garden, I was horrified (and perplexed!) to find a very neat little pile of sawdust at the base of an Escallonia. Tracing the trail further up the trunk, it seemed to come from a small, perfectly formed round hole no more than 2 mm across at the union of deadwood and live vein. It looked just like someone had drilled a neat hole in the tree and not cleaned up after themselves! (I'm 99.9% certain this was NOT the case though... scratch )

Any ideas on what may have caused this (I live in North West England, if that helps!)?

More importantly, how do I deal with this? I'm assuming that something burrowing around inside one of my beloved trees can't be good for the tree? Confused

Many thanks

Hello Matt. There are a multitude of wood borers, from beetles to Wasps. Most of them cocentrate on deadwood only and judging by the size of the hole, you have nothing to worry about. Mox up some pesticide, buy yourself one of those cheap pump hand sprayer/ mister, turn the nozzle to make a jet and squirt in the hole/ holes.

Agree with Will. I use an old inkjet refill syringe and think it is more controllable than my pump sprayer. It has a handy blunt "needle". They are also great for watering airlayers.

I've had "woodworm" Anobium punctatum and Longhorn beetle Rutpela maculata in my trees. http://www.plantpress.com/wildlife/o254-rutpelamaculata.php

Will/Kev

As ever, thank you for your willingness to leap to the rescue of the less experienced.

My mind had been put at ease and I shall be serving an eviction notice on my sawdust-spouting squatter this weekend.

Cheers chaps ThumbsUp
