Cleared someones garden for them yesterday and discovered this rather large Escalonia. As everything was to go I asked the owner if I could cut it back and remove it in the Autumn. Smile Escalonia prep. Img_0513

Took me over an hour to find the trunk. Quite a beast and some really good movement down low. By pruning back now, I should be rewarded with lots of backbudding and a couple of months growing time.Escalonia prep. Img_0515

There seems to be an old split but not very clear at the moment. Will have to go back and finish tomorrow, as there was a rather important football match. cheers Escalonia prep. Img_0516

Will,

I believe that what you have is the species "Escallonia rubra". Nice find and I'm sure with your talent you can make a quite fine bonsai out of it.

Nice Will Smile

Possibly Red Dream, but there's so many of them, 40 + species. All the varieties with 'Donard' in the name have their origins here in Northern Ireland. They are hybrids developed here at the Slieve Donard Nurseries. There's about 30 of them alone! The shape of the flower does point to it being a variety of Rubra.
