There are a lot of learned tree people who use this site so i thought i would put this out there to see what came back.

This is a piece of crochet tied on a living tree trunk. Would you consider it harmfull to the tree, bearing in mind that they only usually last a few weeks. Maybe this is a lucky one that stays for a while so would it be more of a problem.

I very much doubt that it would harm the tree. If the yarn used was synthetic and it remained on for a VERY long time and if the tree thickened sufficiently it could cut into the bark. I also doubt that could happen.

It was removed by somebody anon who claimed it would harbour boring insects which the birds could not get to. In time this would weaken the tree.

Does that mean everybody should take down any roses they have planted against their trees.

Since little light, water and food travels through the surface of the bark to the tree I would figure it wouldn't hurt it. I've seen much worse placed too close and too tight against a tree and end up grown inside of the tree. Like you said, it shouldn't last long enough to have the tree grow around it and the strength of the yarn shouldn't be strong enough to strangle the bark enough to cause water and nutrients from travelling up the tree.

What a load of rubbish. How many trees are covered in Ivy? I have removed Ivy from trees before (although she didn't like it very much. Boom Boom), to find a perfectly healthy and intact trunk.

I would think if it provided safe harbor for insects it would provide better footing for the birds searching for them. The birds might likely destroy it trying to find any hiding insects, but it would not cause any problem for the tree.

Can't be any worse than those pesky yard sale signs and missing dog signs the idiots nail and staple to the trees and they seem to survive that as well.

I agree with the other writers; The yarn will not harm the tree unless it was soak in something toxic to trees. It should be fine.

Imagine all of the people who are looking at this tree now! All of the good vibrations that people are putting out (saying to themselves "how pretty!") will surely help this tree.
I think about all of the live Xmas trees with the lights, ornaments, tinsle, etc. - if any of them are harmed it is usually because they are kept indoors too long. Salut, Todd Smile

Oh dear Smithy...was this a tree-hugging stereotype? Perhaps they would wish to go all round Europe removing vines from trees. Not on your nelly will this crochet cause any problem for the tree...mind I'm not sure the one pictured suits it...perhaps some more reds.
