Here is a movie shot by the Gallery to explain the Escallonia, this Movie is aimed at THE PUBLIC so what I say is geared to THAT AUDIENCE.
I will be posting images from the show shortly.

About the exhibition as a whole.

Good stuff Tony, the tree has filled out nicely from the repot video. Makes my one look like a Shohin! Great to see bonsai being associated with art in the UK.

Top Shelf Tony...really a wonderful bonsai...

This is another GIANT STEP FOR BONSAI into the World of Art...

You said in your interview, "...six weeks..." and "two months...".

Can you tell us how you plan to maintain a healthy environment for your Escallonia for the run of the display??

Great work my friend!

Hi Pat,

The actual exhibition is almost two and a half months long and I am expecting the tree to stay for the duration. As part of the show I will be maintaining the tree, wiring and trimming when necessary.

The light levels and temperature are very good constant 65f or 18c. The Escallonia is I believe originally from South Africa and is a 'vine' so it shoud Suspect be OK in this environment.

The tree is missed sprayed at least three times a day. and water once. The soil mixture is VERY open so will not get waterlogged. I believe a 'time lapse' video is being made of the tree as it blooms.

If the tree does begin to suffer I will swap out with other trees over the course of the exhibition.

Please keep us posted with the tree's progess over the exhibition. It's a wonderful opportunity and in your own inimitable style, you have "played a blinder" again. If I can, I would really like to pop down and see the exhibition.

Well done.

Thank you so very much for that response Tony...

As expected, it sounds like you have all the bases covered (US baseball term). Time lapse sounds exciting. Looking forward to seeing it. Very well planned coverage, which I am sure many others on this forum appreciate as much as I do.

Great job my friend...

Escallonia is now in the Art Gallery Empty Here is the tree in the exhibition.

Post  Guest Fri May 07, 2010 9:29 am

Here is the tree in the exhibition.

The Escallonia suffered very badly this winter and it has been a huge effort to prepare for this show... notice the left side of the tree has lost a lot of branches and subsequently foliage. The tree has NO wire, this will change throughout the show. bounce

The background of black is very specific as it reflects a lot of what the other artworks in the exhibition include. Plus the large size of the background is creates an optical illusion. When the public enter the gallery the bonsai actually looks small as it is dwarfed by the background. It is only when the viewer gets close that the realise that the tree is actually quite large (for a Bonsai) the public perception being that bonsai are very small. Visitors are allowed to make photos for their own use and kids have been seen setting up shots whereby the bonsai is sat on their hand when viewed from a distance (kinda nice Very Happy )

Escallonia is now in the Art Gallery Main-d10

The bonsai could not be displayed in the 'classic' table, scroll, accent scenario as the object of the show is not 'classic display' but how man manipulates nature. Plus watering the tree is a priority and I did not want the curators to move the tree every time it needed watering... Notice the large drip tray under the pot.

I am giving two lectures as part of the event. 29th May 11.00 "how to create bonsai from garden plants" and 10th June 13.00 "How Europe has embraced the art of Bonsai" why not come along? they are free

Any flowers yet Tony? My one is about a week off flowering, but yours being in the gallery, I would think should already be in flower.
