I am planning to show this Japanese Black Pine exposed root style at the upcoming Bonsai Society of Florida convention and exhibition in Orlando this weekend. It has taken over 8 years to get the cascading branch to extend and to fill in. The current pot in by Tom Dimig made many years ago and purchased from Jim Smith who got it from Tom. It is a hasty backyard shot.

This tree was featured in Robert Stephens book "Bonsai Transformation." Very appropriate as Robert will be a guest artist at this weekend's convention.

I am at work so I cannot see the picture...I am sure the tree looks great. I did want to say that Tom's last name is Dimig. I credit Tom with getting me started in Bonsai. Unfortunately to my knowledge, he hasn't made any pots in 10 years or more now and is basically out of the bonsai scene...Perhaps someday he will bring his talents for both designing trees and creating beautiful pottery back to the bonsai community.

I still love this style. When done properly, as here, I think the roots suggest a real trunk, but with more movement and grace than a solid trunk could ever have.

Absolutely stunning Rob. You have made wonderful example of applying proper growing techniques to bring out best in species used to somewhat cooler conditions. Very nice pot. Have a blue glaze pot made by Tom(his unusual shaped drainage holes and cursive sign.) Have a good time in NY. Dustin Very Happy

Pavel, this Japanese Black Pine was not a yamadori but rather nursery grown from seed.

Same here Ed, if I can get my special project at work done in time. Really burning the midnight oil.

The Buttonwood for your demo is growing like gangbusters in my back yard. Bring your carving tools. Very Happy

The BSF Convention was this weekend and BSF put on a pretty good show. The Exhibit feature some nice trees, most on the medium to small size which is unusual for a Florida exhibit.

As promised here are photos of my display. The backdrop is the striped wall paper of the hotel. The horizontal wood along the horizon is a chair rail in the hotel's meeting room.

This the Exposed Root Japanese Black Pine with a Japanses summer scene scroll and an accent plant. The accent pot was made in Puerto Rico.
I made both wood stands.

This was my other display, a Chinese Elm in a natural broom style along with a Willow Leaf Ficus as an companion and an accent plant made with two varieties of succulents (sedum and something else.) The Chinese Elm is in a Nick Lenz, USA, pot. The accent is in a Dale Cochoy, USA, pot. The Ficus is in a reproduction of an antique Chinese pot commissioned by the Bonsai Clubs International a few years ago. I made all three stands.

Very nice Rob. I'm not a big fan of exposed root style as many of them just don't work for me. Yours however is a lovely example and what makes it even more impressive is the fact that's it's done from nursery stock and in your climate! Well done thumbs up

Some action shots from the weekend courtesy or Ronn Miller.

Robert Stephen was our guest artist for the weekend. I had the priviledge of assisting him on Friday night as he made a Brazilian Raintree Penjing.

Robert places trees and I muck the moats.

Mike Rodgers had provided some large sheets of moss - thinking it would work as a toupe I tried it on in case my hair falls out when I get old.
Note the mucky hands.

Here was the finished work.

Ed Trout worked on a large buttonwood to be raffled off donated by Ronn Miller but originally donated by Ed Trout several years ago. Interesting history of this tree.
