Chinese Elm Question

Post  bonsaisr on Fri May 14, 2010 1:29 am

I suggest you post this on the Pests & Diseases forum. Meanwhile, give your tree more light & air movement. Elms take full sun. And spray with a garden fungicide. Look at the labels & try to get one that is listed for elms.

Be certain you do not water your trees so the leaves get wet. Water splattering from infected leaves is a major means of transmission. Infected leaf removal is a must, and disinfect tools used for pruning (or wash fingers used for picking off) leaves between each use.

Here's all you need to know: www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/enpp/pathology/pathcirc/pp189.pdf

This recommends benlate as a fungicide but benlate is no longer sold. Jim, what alternative do you suggest?

Thanks

Since I have a bottle always on hand, I tend to use lime sulfur. It seems to control cedar apple rust. Since it is endemic wherever there are apples and juniper together, I doubt anything can eradicate it.

I'd forgotten that Benlate was a no no now. Here's what I've heard can be substituted: "Captan, copper hydroxide, thiophanate-methyl, lime-sulfur, and sulfur.
Sprays should be applied at budbreak and every week to two weeks,
especially before rain, until terminal growth stops."

Hey John,

Get yourself to a full service nursery in your area. There are commercial formulations specifically made for blackspot. It's a common fungicide used for roses and will work just fine on Chinese elm. When you spray make sure and completely soak the tree foliage and branches as well making sure to get to the inside of the tree. The fungus lives on the bark of the tree and infects the new growth as it emerges. make sure and spray the small branches of the new growth as well. The formulation that I use leaves a blue residue on the leaves but since I'm not showing the tree it's not a big deal to me and I'd much rather get rid of the blackspot. It's advisable to re-spray the tree after a good downpouring of rain. During the winter months I spray the dormant tree with horticultural oil and lime sulpher once or twice and then the black spot fungicide once I see the buds begin to swell in the very early spring. Using this regimen I have been able to keep the blackspot under control.

good luck,
Randy
