Tiny Yamadori Empty Tiny Yamadori

Post  Storm Sat Mar 20, 2010 10:01 am

I was out getting a tree yesterday. I dont know what kind of species it is, and I dont have any plans for it just yet.
I've cut it back alot but still there is a huge cutting job left. Any long term ideas would be great, and if you have some great advice how to keep it alive, its much appriciated. This tree broke my cutters!
Gonna take a saw and cut off the long branch to the left on it but not sure how far down. Its too straight and big.
The thing that could help identify the tree is that it has some kind of thorns. Well, it doesnt look much like it but I got a good amount of scratches digging and carrying it.
I planted it in an angle so it would be more stabile in the grow box. Its heavy and could tip over.
I dont know how much of the tree I can keep since I dont know how much roots it needs to survive. I washed most of the dirt off, and it lost alott of roots when I did, but there was thick grass growing on top of it so it was all hard around it. Im currently having a plastic bag over the box, so the damn cats wont use it as a litterbox.

Edit: Doesnt look like the imagehoster is running atm.

Thats a few so far. I can get some pics during the day or something of the tips, the bark and such so you might know what tree it is.
All comments are welcome.

Thx. Thats what I was thinking. Planning something in the middle of the left trunk. Between where it starts and where it splits into two.
I was considering making something like a twin trunk upright, with 2 apex's merging into almost one. Cant make a virtual though.
Does anyone know if the plums will come when its a small bonsai? Can it take many years?

Yeah, I watered it!
I cut it a bit less than you suggested, and I will show you tomorrow. Im looking for long term ideas here, but atm im just focusing on getting it to survive.

Ok, a few more photos then. I dont know about the left branch anymore. Im thinking of removing it all. Making an uro in the future or something. I dont want it to heal over there if I cut it, since it would give a nasty bulk on the middle there.
As you see some of the branches have wire on them. I was trying to make them go over to the left on the image, but the thickest wire I have cant match with the pressure. So I have to tie them down. Ill wait a bit with that though. I dont have the right tools either.
I guess I will just let it be for a few years now. Letting it grow. Showing me what it wants. Or if it survives at all.

Alright. Pictures will be added later. The server doesnt respont to my request.

I’d cut off the bottom left branch…..reduce the apex down to the wired branch and shorten the remaining branches according to their thickness and placement on the tree. Smile

That left branch is pretty big. I would remove it also.

Yes, the big branch on the left has to go. Never wire anything on a newly collected tree. It's under enough stress as it is.

Thanks for the replies. Ill leave it alone for a while. Or I might remove the left one early. How would you remove it? Hollow it out a bit, or would you want it to heal over?

Storm, the tree is leaning away from your proposed front a lot. Is there a possibility of using the other side as a front (large red arrow) and using one of these branches (small red arrows)as a new apex? Maybe there are desirable surface roots hidden beneath the soil level on that side. That way, when you remove the thick branch it will be less visible as well.

Thanks for the Idea Quinn. Ill take a good look tomorrow!
I can also take more pictures from all angles.
I have another question really. I dug it up from dirt. I didnt remove it all, cause it would lead to pulling off a bunch of roots. When I water it when the cat-sand is a bit dry, the dirt will still be a bit wet. Is there a big chance I will get some root rot there?

A small update of the tree.
It was growing very good. Leaves were popping everywhere, and I think I got hold on the algea problem. I dont know though. It seems to have good enough draining.
Now there is a little issue that have been scaring me. The leaves dont grow anymore. The whole tree just stopped. Some of the leaves here and there, mainly on one of the top branches have become stiff. Just crumbling. Its in full sun more or less. I water it twice when there is hot sun on it. Showering the leaves so they wont get burned. I feed it every other week more or less. My belowed waters it when its going to be on the hottest, while im at work. Its lukewarm water, so it doesnt get shocked. I havent wired it, havent trimmed it, cut branches, or anything. I just leave it be.
The only thing that comes to mind is that there have been a few days now and then with a bit sharp wind, and I dont have too much shelter for it.
My other yamadori's that were oaks are slowly starting to open the buds.
My inside Sageretia is growing good, but the big ficus is dead. The little one is still just on hold. Not growing or dying.
Anything I can do? Any suggestions, please?

I would like to focus on the above detail and ask some expert members to quote whether it is safe to feed a newly collected tree in this rate of frequency.
Thank you!

It depends on many factors like, the amount of roots that the tree has, the vigour that it shows, the substrate which is used, the type of feed, the amount of feed (there may be other factors that i cannot remember now)..... There are no hard and fast rules but one must be extremely careful when starting to feed collected or newly repotted trees.
