A sad day for me.. Empty A sad day for me..

Today I got really sad and kinda pissed!
A building complex not far from me, (you know those with 4 appartments over 2 floors) had a nice tree outside.
It was a pine, about 1.5 metres high, and was a twin trunk with trunks at about 20cm width base.
I have had my eyes on it for a long time, and always wanted to dig it up and make a bonsai out of it. It had alot of short branches and were full of needles. Best yamadori Ive seen in real life. (I love big bonsai's)
The thing is, I found out yesterday that I would build up some courage and go and ask if I could dig it up. When I came up there today, I saw that some idiot in the house had cut down every tree in the area. The pine was cut into pieces and thrown away.
I couldnt believe it. I nearly wanted to cry.
Any of you got that experience?

I've had family do it to me. My father had these 50yr Old Azalea on his property. I told him I wanted to dig them the next season. So I spade them and waited.

The old fart got "antsy in the pantsy" and butchered and pulled them.... I am still sore about it. Been about 2 years now. So I think he got the point over that event. Now I get to dig up what I ask for with out fear of the Geezer attacking it. Smile

In other news, I saw a local school cut and remove 15 old huge trees from the campus, before they knocked it down.

And an apartment complex did the same to about 30 yew...

Nothing I really wanted to bonsai, but I have seen innumerable trees in the area that were my old favorites be chopped down. The reasons for their murder were never obvious to me. Many pple clearly have much different attitudes and relationships with plants than I do, often ripping out entire landscapes because they had become "too" mature.

Some of the trimming of large lawn trees in this area makes me shake my head in wonder also. The main branches are often cut to stubs and then sprout hideous spindly suckers all over. I never saw that done when I was growing up in upstate NY. Perhaps pple there just didn't have the extra money to waste on such bizarre behavior.

My 2 acre property was bounded on 3 sides by woods when I purchased it. I came home one day to find the neighbor on one side of me had clear cut the entire acre or so that bordered me. He told me it was too "messy". I was speechless. I hope he paid outrageously to have all those stumps removed.

I let that courage thing get the better of me once, and it will never happen again. All they can say is "No!" or "Get the hell off my property!", or maybe worse I guess.

About 15 years ago I found the most amazing wisteria in a really trashy yard (people and yard). It was one of those short, fat trunks with lots of good curves that only happens after years of growing "treeform" without any support. I even had a big empty pot waiting for it - or me to get the courage to ask for it. Finally I descided it was "the day" only to find it in the perpetual trash heap at the side of the road and a car on blocks where it had been. Had they pulled it up with a chain? Nope, sawed it off at the ground.

I'd rather be shot down than wonder "what if..."

Hey Russell,

I've been there but mine was a successfull collection. Wisteria when left alone for 40 years can be quite amazing. This one is 50 years in a local pig pen with a 12 inch diameter trunk. Keep trying gang! keep those eye's wide open and be persistent.

There are 2 monster Fuschia within 200 yards of my house. I have asked both owners, nay begged, for permission to collect them. One was a flat refusal with no chance of persuasion, the other offered some slim hope at first, but my hopes were dashed at the last moment. The shitty thing is, I have to walk past both of them every day, and they gloat at me when I pass.

I've still got an absolute giant of an Escallonia in my sights, though. It's almost double the size of Tony's specimen, and sits in the front garden of a large, Victorian house near where I work. A young 'yuppy' couple are renovating the property and I don't see them objecting to my request. Trouble is, they're never in when I pass.

*sigh*

So, knock on the door. They can only say NO.

I don't know. If they saw him while at that "Football" game they might call the police. Smile

Just this weekend I was out in my back yard and few houses down my neighbors were pulling azaleas that were pretty nice and a good 15yrs old. I walked over and asked what they were doing as best I could because they were all deaf. They pulled a stump out of the trash with a good root ball around it and I pointed to myself and held my hands out to ask if I could take it and they looked at me with wonder as to why I would want their stump and I tried to gesture and mouth bonsai as best I could...nothing. Then I spelled it in the sign language slowly and awkwardly and they nodded and gave me the stump, then pulled another, even better one out of the trash. I don't know if they are going to make it but the weather has been wet and mild here lately so I immediately threw them in a sand pile and hoped for the best, I will keep you updated.

A few years back I had noticed some korean boxwood that I thought were pretty nice and said to myself "I should ask about those someday". Six months later, not having asked, I came home to see a line of newly planted arborvitae all mulched in and pretty, the boxwoods nowhere to be seen. "D**n it!" Evil or Very Mad
