Very cool Ed! In the second picture the new pot looked a little big but not when it is in your hand Razz
Also when the foliage fills out a little more, it will look even better. I also like that pale color with the yellow flowers.
Nice,

I love these trees. The roots always seem suitable for exposing. I have one I will be repotting this year. When do you recommend working on roots? After the bloom is done or before?

Hi Pavel and John, thanks for your nice comments Very Happy
And Velodog,if the temperature is normal and it is not freezing cold you can re-pot your tree sunny
You can work on the roots after the bloom, and you can do it when it is in bloom, but you must pruned it completely when you re-potted it.

Thanks Ed. I've already pruned mine nearly as thoroughly as you have yours in preparation for spring. I'm unsure of the cold hardiness of these as I had lost one once in winter so had been wintering it in the refrigerator which had kept it dormant. It's now out of the fridge and in the basement with temps in the 40's-50's. It should be waking soon I think.

I like it too. I've had an old one for a good few years and though it has nice mature bark, it is very slow growing. Any tips on preferred mix, feeding etc?

Thanks for posting this Ed. Also for the basic information. I have purchased a couple of very similar plants from a local nursery in one gallon pots.

Question: How much root pruning can they take? Will they take a drastic top & root pruning as say a forsythia might?

Thanks,
Neil

Hi Neil,it depends if your bonsai is in good condition.
If it is in good condition you can take 0.33 % from the root ball, and when you do this you must wait two weeks to give fertilizer.
you must pruned it completely when you re-potted it,if you don't do this you can loose your tree because the roots can't give the tree the same energy than before the root-pruning.

Hi Ed

Like this pot far better (but I also liked the first pot shown - the white with a blue painting that will suit the yellow flowers very good). This one looks more stable than the second choice though.
There is a good flow and movement in this little tree, that will look good when flowering I believe. Good work.

Regards
Morten
