Does anyone wanna share some information in regard to grafting onto Ponderosa Pine? I was thinking about using Scot's pine. Is there anything else more suitable? I would like to consider doing the grafts in 1-2 years.

Thanks,

Joe

If I recall correctly, Nick Lenz wrote about this in his book, "Bonsai from the Wild". I believe the technique he advised was thread grafting...the grafts need 3 plus years to take.

Heh, Funny you mention it, I have that book not even 60cm from me. It does talk about using thread grafts. And the time frame you mentioned is similar to the books. I was just hoping someone other then Nick has tried it Smile

Joe, shall we assume that you succumbed to the Ponderosa Pine temptation at Nature's Way last weekend?

Hi Joe, Ponderosa will take most all the pines we work with. You didn't say how old your tree is or if it has an incredible trunk or if you want to change foliage or start a new trunk. These questions are not compatibility questions but aesthetic ones. differing bark color and textures in some places are distracting, black pine\white pine is an example most are familiar with. I haven't used Scots on ponderosa because they are readily available with nice trunks. I have used black, red, white(all japanese) pine to change foliage and the grafts are hidden in the foliage, less visible. My favorite is J.Black Ban Sho Ho. The bark is a good match and the deep green needles contrast nicely with the Ponderosa's bark

Fantastic assumption! You are correct. I was tempted by other things also.

Did you bite?

I see that Ponderosa has never reducing needles so, I was thinking about grafting for the sole purpose of smaller needles. I will upload a picture tonight.
The tree was collected form the RockyMountains, It is assumed that the tree is well into area of 100 plus years.

More to come

Many times, but not there. I've been buying them directly from Andrew Smith through his website and at shows for many years and currently have seven. I've found them to be very hardy in our area never having lost one in over 12 yrs. They can look pretty good in my opinion with the appropriate styling and removal of needles pointing in wild directions, but never as neat as a black pine. It's tempting to think of grafting, but then it wouldn't really be a Ponderosa. I just love them for their bark and trunk shapes and accept the needles for what they are.

I would still be interested in seeing pictures of some with grafted foliage though.

I was just on Andy's web site looking yesterday. Some interesting stuff. Wish I had the funds to explore his stock. Seems like he posts some reasonable pieces though.
I'll take a picture of this Ponderosa, I have been a tad busy.

Here's a short video, Small and poor quality but you get an idea of the 3d aspect of the tree. Please forgive all shakiness, blurs, etc. Camera phone video.
