Acer trunk

Post  karatebonsai on Wed Apr 28, 2010 6:23 am

Well, almost two years ago I got two mallsai for my birthday. My quest for knowledge took a while, but now I am brave enough to start on a "real" tree.

So I have found this trunk in a friends garden. It is a Dutch maple species - not really sure which one.
Any comments or ideas on this first start?

Looks like Acer pseudoplatanus - Sycamore. Not really a good species for bonsai as the internodes are widely spaced and the leaves coarse and difficult to reduce. Some people have struggled with it for many years and produced half decent results, but I've never seen a show stopper.

I wouldn’t bother digging this up mate. It has very little to offer as a bonsai subject. Look for something else unless you’re something of a masochist. Smile

If you like maples, the only maple native to your country that is suitable for bonsai is field maple, Acer campestre. Find pictures on Google & then look for it out in the country, or buy one at a garden center. Many people have Japanese maples in their gardens. Look for seedlings you can dig up, but you will have to plant them in the ground for several years.
