Re: is it too late?
Bobby, I think the important question is, are you satisfied with caliper growth this year. If you cut, it stops. If you are satisfied, then cut. I'm assuming this is a healthy, vigorous tree. Elms experience very little die back, if any, and there should be prolific budding.

Bobby, I don't understand. I'm assuming caliper growth. Girth, diameter, size, when you cut the top, there will be no increase in size this year or very little.

What is the matter with your Elm Bobby. Does it have contrived curves you want to eliminate? You can cut back severely, this time of year but will get a stronger response if it wasn't repotted as well.

it's lacking any taper, and the top is rubbish. nice and thick, but that's about it's only charm. another inexperienced buy a couple of years ago, and not repotted since. It's very vigorous and popping buds all over lower down so I thought I'd reduce it down in the hopes of developing something small and chunky.

Hi Fiona, I tend to forget about the "wide" audience I'm also a potter and know that vernacular doesn't travel well Thanks for the reminder.
