Cutting big trunks Empty Cutting big trunks

Its a small question really, and probably has alot of answers but, I have been scouting today, and seen alot of trees I could dig up. The problem is, If I see f.ex an oak, or birch with a thick trunk, and it is lets say 5 metres high, and has a good bark, I dig it up and get a good amount of roots, will it die most likely or start budding if I leave no branches?
It has to be the right time ofc and all, but just thinking of the big chop.

With birch, you'd likely end up with the trunk dying and some suckers sprouting from the base (if it lived at all).

Hi Storm, gotta love your enthusiasm, but, yo, if you're seeing trees that size you're either looking in the wrong place or you're looking up to high. Numero uno, have patience. The trees you're looking for are out there and you don't need to go chopping trees to get what you're looking for. You just have to get there, where the trees are, and they're not usually lurking near to the beaten path. You can and I do gather working stock from the forest. For a tree the size you mention (sorry Jim) I would chop the trunk insitu (dragging the trunk home for fire wood) and allow the tree to re-generate and then begin the process of retrieving the tree. Rather, just slow down a bit, and be real selective when choosing a tree to invest alot of time and energy into. Take time to peruse the yamadori posted around the forum. Most of those beauties have five to ten years on them since they were gathered before they become what you see pictured, even though many of them changed very little in that time. Patience, long term, abiding patience, and you will find something nice.
