Iwasaki five needle pine repotted in 2007/2008
this is the five needle pine that one of my students received as a gift.
first, i repot it in March 2007 in a training box.
remove it from the pot before working
close up of the front nebari before work
close up of the back
we bare root the front all the way to the trunk and plant it in the training box. this is what it looks like a year later

Felix worked on removing tree from the box. He ordered the new pot for this tree. it arrived in time, in March 2008
small gap was made between the rootball and the box
Doug helped me taking out of the box
preparing the pot with wire
close up of the rootball and mycorrhiza
there was more mycorrhiza on the front that we bare root last year
this time we do not have to work on it too much. the roots are healthy and filled with feeder roots
this time i focus on bare root the back half. the old soil contain too much dust and organic materials. feeder roots do not grow well in the old organic soil.
the front of the tree, the rootball stay intact. long roots were cut and this is what it looks like after work.
pumice is used as drainage and then a layer of medium size soil on it
push it down and twist it at the same time to get rid of the air pocket on the bottom of the rootball.
check the position and the level of the root ball in the pot before tying with wire

IMHO it is still recovering from the quarantine process. it was planted in poor quality soil. you can see from the first pic that the root was not healthy. Now, it is in good soil this pine has almost fully recovered. the goal is to strengthened the right branch before making further decision.
the tree is over 100 years old. growing a branch, it will take 20 to 30 years or more. cutting a branch off, it will take less than a minute.
it is up to Felix on what he want to do with the tree or redesign.

The tree looks even better in 2010, I was lucky enough to see the tree with my proper eyes last month when I had a workshop with Boon at Felix place.

Hi Boon,
Great sequence of the tree and time taken to repot. Most would have gone the whole way by removing all the old soil. Great that you did it in two stages. the result form putting the tree in a box is fantastic... plus this would have given the owner a good deal of time to select the correct pot for the tree. Great pot too!!!!

Tony,
this is what i have done for over 10 years. This technique(removing half old soil or half bare root) has saved several old trees. I have not lost a tree using this technique. Unless it is too far gone. that is from poor quality soil that cause root rot.
I usually wait 2 years between repotting. This time, Felix had the pot for it. that is the reason why we repot it again. and i see that the tree is growing very well in the box. wooden box is very good to help the tree to grow. the owner custom ordered the pot just for that tree. i like it a lot too.
thanks for the comment.
