Hi everyone. A most excellent site you have going here folks. I'm ashamed to say I've been one of those lurkers for a while now (I was going to say voyeur but you might get the wrong idea)and I think its high time I started participating. To that end, here's a little collected tamarack (Larix laricina) that I just repotted. 8in/20cmgreetings from the Bruce Img_0811

ps I can see from my preview that I may need to reduce my image size - let me know

Hi Dave,

Glad that you took the plunge and started posting. It's not essential to resize, as the software generally takes care of it but sometimes for portrait format it does help.

Have you considered reducing your Larix by nearly 50% and turning up a branch as a new leader? It would improve taper and movement.

A good tree to work with.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. When I collected this guy in the spring of 07 the basic shape was already there but the root system was quite one sided so I've been mainly working on getting some balance below the soil. A bit of light pruning and wiring was all that's been needed on top. Here's a pic from the fall of 2007

That's an interesting suggestion Kev. It's also a good one. It probably hadn't occurred to me because I was so pleased with the tree's natural lightness and grace. Something like this maybe?

Definitely food for thought. Thanks again - Dave

Yep that's exactly what I had in mind. It will make a lovely shohin in a few years.

NO NO NO! Please keep it the way it is. The potential shohin looks too much like a bonsai in my eye, what you have now is far more tree-like. Just my two cents worth. Smile

I'm not sure this is a good idea either. I can't see a convincing transition from trunk to apex in this photo.

A couple of years unrestrained top growth with a Larch will develop a new leader that's in scale with the lower trunk and another chop and regrow will give more movement and convincing taper. Feed like mad, but concentrate on regular pinching to increase ramification of the lower branches. I twist out the centres of the "shaving brushes" just as they start to extend.
