recently repotted cork bark elm

first repot since bought a couple of years ago. was amazed to see the trunk lurking beneath the soil. Pales into insignificance to the rest of the stuff posted, and needs lots of work on the ramification, but by cracky I love it:

Wonderful trunk and nebari. Limbs are coming along as well. I'm sure that a couple of more years will make this tree an eye-catcher.

It is a nice tree and with the right pot it would look even better. not that i know what the right pot would be but that one doesn't look like it. You'll probably get loads of replys saying it is . I do have poor taste in pots.

ah mate, I agree, but my resources are very limited. I haven't even begun to think about pots yet because I can't afford to. cheap material (this was my second cheapest buy at £80 from the BTA in Coventry, the larch on the other thread was the highest at £100) to get the hang of the basics then onwards and upwards. I know what you mean with the pots. I struggle to buy nice pots. I just pick them up when i can.

A bit of wiring should sort out any apparent straightness in the apex. Very nice tree Bobby and will get even better as the corkiness improves with age.

One tip that will speed this corkiness up. They tend to pop buds from the trunk all the time when well fed. Pull out with tweezers any and all that are in places where you don't want them, but allow one to grow at the back and let it go freely for a couple of years. It need to be kept low down and away from the tree at first so it doesn't shadow any part of the tree. This will thicken the trunk below it rapidly and make the bark cork up. As it is a sacrifice branch, it will be cut off completely after it has achieved the objective you want.

shucks chaps, thanks.I was pleased with it as an ongoing project for a novice, but I'm taken aback by your good opinions. I'm gradually working on the structure, and I don't want to over stress it. My camera work makes the top look a little more static than it is, and the thin branch wired horizontally to the left as viewed is aimed to fill it out a bit and give it a bit more movement. i'll post again when it's got some green on it. Thanks for the tip about the sacrifice branch Kev.

Seems like a steal at the price, and I'm marking it up to our weak US dollar. Its nice enough that I'd almost fly myself over to get the chance to wire it up.
