Move coming up, how should I prepare my trees? Empty Move coming up, how should I prepare my trees?

Hello all,

I have a move coming up soon, mid to late August, and I'm looking for some advice on how to prepare and transport my trees, all 7 of them: 2 acer palmatum, 1 Korean hornbeam, 2 Elms, 2 Quince, 1 crepe myrtle and one unknown.

I'll be moving from Davis, CA to Portland, OR. This move is about 600 mi. north from where I currently live. Unfortunately due to space constraints I will not be able to transport them in the pots they currently reside. As a result they will have to be repotted, in August, perhaps the worst time to do it. Any advice would be helpful.

Thanks,

cordon

Quite a climate difference between Davis and Portland, too.

I'm a tad confused, though. Why would trees IN pots be much harder (space-wise) o transport than the same trees lifted from those pots? And what happens to the pots? Don't they get transported.

At any rate, keep them out of the wind created by whatever you transport them in. Mine came up here (roughly the same distance) in a horse trailer. It is open along the top and the wind inside dried several trees completely out.

I'm not sure what your budget is. Did you consider mailing them to your new place? What size are they? Many people sell and ship trees via UPS, USPS, etc. You could pack them and have them ready to ship the day before you leave. just a thought.

I hadn't thought about simply mailing them to myself, That might be a good option. Any suggestions on how to pack them for the post office?

It will be a pretty big change in climate, but hopefully my maples will enjoy the lower temps and less intense sun. Anyone know a Bonsai club in the portland area?

The pots that they are in are rather large, considering the size of the trees. They are about a foot square and six inches deep.

The pots themselves are wooden grow boxes which can be disassembled and packed when the time comes. So I was thinking I might repot the trees into somethin smaller and easier to pack for transport then put them back in their larger pots once the move is over. The budget is pretty tight.

Thanks

Frankly, unpotting and repotting will be tougher on your trees than simply piling them up together on the back of your car,van or truck. If your budget is tight, I'f forget about the mail.
