Taiwan Earthquake
To all the forum members,
Early this morning (thursday, March 4), a 6.4 earthquake hit the southern half of Taiwan. Many of you know that Taiwan is close to my heart. May all of our bonsai and non-bonsai friends be well.
Kind regards,
Jose Luis

Chile, Taiwan, where next? Is the "Ring of Fire" going active? I live juat a few miles from the San Andreas fault. There are major faults north and south. Which one will move next?
I better buy more bunjee cords to secure my bonsai to bench.

I'm told by seismologist friends, that seismic activity often seems to be cyclic. This cycle, they say, started with the quake and terrible tsunami in Indonesia a few years ago. It has some years to go.

It just makes you realise that sometimes we get our own little problems (in my case grumbling about a roof leak caused by the snow) way out of persepctive when we consider the major hardships faced by others. At least I've got a roof to leak - there will be many for whom that is no longer the case.
Thinking of them.

HEllo bonsai friends,
I received word from Lao Tze Cheng Cheng Kung that all bonsai friends in Tainan, Kaohsiung and the southern counties in Taiwan are well. Let's hope no other countries get hit by these.
Kind regards,
Jose Luis

It is funny... in a pecular, not ha ha way... that the news gets out so slowly and frequently wrong; while an internationally insignificant forum, can get the word out about world disasters quicker, and frequently more accurate, than the media.
Either way, we will continue to keep those in harms way in our thoughts and prayers.

(FYI: by internationally insignificant, I didn't mean we were insignificant in the world of bonsai, just in the world news market.) Not sure why I explained myself, other than I was fearful that someone would take the comment contrary to its intended meaning. j

That's the beauty and power of this connectedness. We can share instantly, with reliable and trusted reporters on the ground in many parts of the world. And with none of the media hype that "has" to be expected from our 24hour, bottom feeding news networks, our consciousness of the real plight of others is raised.

They can happen anywhere -- even in an area that is as geologically ancient and asleep as the Bule Ridge in the Southern Appalachians. We were awakened about this time last year by a "BUMP" at 5:30 a.m. We had no idea what it might have been and thought maybe there had been an explosion somewhere nearby.
Turns out it was a Richter 3 quake from something settling under the Blue Ridge.
In 1886, Sleepy Charleston, SC was hit by a 6.6 quake (felt as far away as eastern Mississippi) that caused "$6 million worth in damages, while in the whole city the buildings were only valued at approximately $24 million." (Wikipedia)
