I thought members would like to take a look at Peter Werrens rather nice Wire Holder. I did not ask if this was commercially available. But if any enterprising hobbyists could make one I would be interested.

I have given up on wire holders. They are a pain to load and the wire eventually gets scrambled. I find it easier to keep rolls of wire sorted on shelves and use the small rolls as required.

Thats a serious looking wire holder!
Does it have a trailer hitch?

I very often have folks ask me what type of wire holder I use.

My answer is always...." It looks just like a picnic table"

I have the same answer when asked what type of workstand I use! Very Happy

Heavy Duty Wire holder HD Movie Empty "Benreel"

Post  saruyama Wed Mar 03, 2010 12:40 am

The spools/wire holder is known as a "benreel", combination of the word benri - convenient and reel - meaning reel.
They were designed and made to order by Urushibata of Taisho-en fame. There are two types of spool, one which the side unscrews so you can slip the standard sized aluminium rolls onto it without needing to wind it on. The other is one for copper wire which means you have to wire it on yourself. There is an axle and a handle attachment.
I got mine as a graduation present from Urushibata but they are available commercially. They are heavy but could be sent by sea freight. Contact Taisho-en directly on their website for details.

Welcome to the wonderful but occasionally weird and wacky world of the IBC, Peter. Your picture had preceeded you (thanks to Mr Tickle's exceedingly irritating wee camera) so it is really good to have you here in person.

I tried to lift your wire holder (when you weren't looking) and it was, as you say, pretty heavy.

In the words of the Yorkie ad: " It's not for girls!"

Howdy Peter, welcome to the IBC.

Question on putting copper wire in the device - if you are rolling it on, aren't you starting the work hardening of the copper wire?

Heavy Duty Wire holder HD Movie Empty work hardening

Post  saruyama Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:38 am

To a certain extent yes which is why it should only be used with small gauge wires. Anything above a Japanese sized 16 (forgive me, I do not know the metric/imperial equivalent) will harden and be more difficult to use, anything below that will show no macroscopic difference in ductility or tensile strength. If used on a rapid turnover basis as it would be in a professional garden then there is no difference, just preference to how you use wire.

Copper wire hardens under its own weight over time anyway, and the way that it is kept generally has importance on its useful lifespan.

Re- Jean Naideux link
Heavy Duty Wire holder HD Movie Affraid Wow!! At the present exchange rate with the euro
that's over £400. Call me "Scottish" but!!! that's at least 3
good pots or 35 rolls of wire. Probably weighs the same.

Yes, but look at Jean's location.

A lot of the £400 is probably the shipping cost from the moon.
