wanting to create a shohin black pine??!

Post  eaton2008 on Sat Feb 27, 2010 1:29 pm

i am hoping to graft 3 black pine yearlings with a friend to create a hopefuly much better shohin size tree?!

you can probably see that this tree has had a white pine grafted to it many years ago but has left an unsightly bulge(pic3,5) + bad wire marks that may never go?!

what do people think?? is it a good idea or not?? please let me know as Feb, March seem to be the time to graft pines?!

Its not really a bad tree. In your 2nd photo theres some interesting movement in the trunk. Put some effort & real thought into what direction to go and you maybe surprised. I think you'd find you had a nicer tree much more quickly than if you attempted to graft JBP to this.

I'd like to see what Pavel would do with this. Hes got a demonstrated knack for turning somewhat mediocre looking materila into really stunning trees.

I agree with Neil. I wonder if there's a smaller tree in there, if you cut off the main trunk just above the first branch and use the first branch as the new trunk.

I do agree with tom : with proper care, a branch this size can easily be bent. In picture 2 it's got a nice movement that can be accentuated if the branch is put forward I think.

I think I would go with the shortening option, rather than grafting. Having said that, I know from previous experience that White Pine branches are extremely brittle and need careful handling.

shortening is not out of the question, but the 1st branch is very hard to bend and looks like some damage has been caused by a previous owner?!also there is bud wire marks in places! my favourite part of the tree is the powerful nebari (from one side)?!
