The day jobs we do? Empty The day jobs we do?

Post  Jaco Kriek Thu Feb 11, 2010 8:09 am

Hi all

At a recent club meeting I got into discussions on bonsai with members I’m not really familiar with. The discussion turned to the day jobs we do and I realised just how diverse we as bonsai lovers are, as far as different professions go. Our jobs have nothing to do with the fact that we practise bonsai. Reading the threads this morning I was wondering what day jobs the IBC members hold.

Would you care to tell?

I’ll start: I am a Civil engineering technologist designing municipal services (such as water and sewer reticulations) for towns.

How about you?

Regards

I teach English in a secondary school (15-18 year-old pupils) Embarassed

But I'm the only one in my club (about 20 people) to visit English-speaking forums, and a minority of them are members of a French-speaking forum. Their day-jobs are very different : there's a retired executive who used to work for IBM, factory workers, a gardener, a saxophonist (jazz, and private lessons), a couple of people working for or owning small construction businesses, a fireman, a soldier, office workers... and a tiny minority of women Neutral

Ooooh Alain! So - is being a woman a "job" in itself? I've always said it is, and there's a helluva big job description accompanying it.

Please note, dear readers, this is a complete and utter leg pull. The day jobs we do? Icon_evil Unless of course you're brave enough to take us on here. Gals, be ready for this.

btw freelance school teacher/college lecturer in English, Communications, Training & Development, S&M (and Tony, that's Supervision and Management - not the other one!) and at one time Horticulture.

I asked for it ! Laughing

I noticed how awkward the end of my message was, but I didn't edit it.

Anyway, being a woman is not a "day job", it's a full time job, isn't it Fiona ?... Wink

clinical nurse specialist in child and adolescent psychiatry. and anyone who suggests that this is a girly job, I suggest you try managing a 6 foot two 17 year old gangster from inner city nottingham armed with a pool ball in a sock and a snapped pool cue with only an arthritic 65 year old biddy to help you (can you tell I'm sensitive about this Embarassed ?)

Right. Time to bring this high-end employment chatter back down to earth!

I'm a welder/fabricator. Our company designs and manufactures exhaust and catalytic converter systems for everything from cars, vans and fork lift trucks to fire engines, buses and we recently made a one-off special for a victorian steam-powered fairground ride.

Actually, it doesn't sound quite that bad when I read it. How clever am I!!

I am enjoying this thread. Bobby: I don't blame you for being sensitive. My wife has been a caregiver all her life (as a Registered Nurse)...it takes a special type of person to do what you folks do...tremendous understanding and compassion towards our fellow human beings. Keep up the good work!

Best regards,
Tom

I am a professional frustrated artist and I do remodeling/finish carpentry/cabinet making to support that. I hope to some day do the art to support a personal furniture-making wood shop but that is a pipe dream.
