John worked on his scots pine.
He wanted to see if we agreed about removing the left hand branch.
Before.

Chris gives his thoughts.
Dragon Workshop Dscf2714

John agreed and covered the branch. We all had another look.
Dragon Workshop Dscf2715

John was sure and started to cut.
Dragon Workshop Dscf2716

The end result...
Dragon Workshop Dscf2811

part of the branch removed.

Dragon Workshop Empty Gerwyn works on a rotten trunk.

Post  Jeremy Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:42 pm

Gerwyn re-potted a juniper with a rotten base.
He fixed it onto a block of wood and used wood hardener to seal it.
Dragon Workshop Dscf2718
Dragon Workshop Dscf2719

John assisted as Gerwyn cut the block.
Dragon Workshop Dscf2720

Trunk and block attached.
Dragon Workshop Dscf2722

Gerwyn will use milliput filler to create a base on the juniper.

Dragon Workshop Empty hawthorn raft,

Post  Jeremy Wed Feb 03, 2010 7:59 pm

John, after reading the replies to the earlier post, https://ibonsaiclub.forumotion.com/bonsai-f1/hawthorn-raft-t2183.htm felt he needed to explain a little about the process he is undertaking with this raft.
He is allowing the apexes on the 2 smaller trunks to extend to achieve a better taper on each. He fully intends to reduce each once he has what he planned.

The raft has a long history, dug by John 9 years ago and given to a friend, the raft was a little neglected over the last few years. So when John took over ownership a year ago, there was a lot of catching up and cutting back to do.

I feel the progress the raft has made in the last 12 months in John's hands is very good.

Post  Smithy Wed Feb 03, 2010 8:10 pm

Hi Jeremy ,
Its great watching the workshop threads. I for sure will come along in the near future. .I try to get a couple of hrs on a Sat and Sun in the shed repoting at the moment. There seemed like so many to do and so little time. I try to not make the whole weekend about bonsai (even though i could quite easily do), as my son gets a bit fed up with me. I just wish you were all a bit closer and i would be more of a regular. If i could do family stuff in the morning i would love to just to pop along for the afternoon. I must confess though i'm a bit of a home boy on the weekends and loose the will to go travelling about.

i'm hoping to get something together that i can get some help with. it was originally going to be Larch i got from the auction but i couldn't wait and worked that one.

The beech group i got from the auction needs to go in a pot and as I can't afford one I'm going to get a slate . This would be a good project to bring down as i also want to move a few of the trees.

Would somebody have a grinder there to shape the slate?

That dead wood is pretty good ain't it. Cool
Hope I can do the foliage justice to go with it. Embarassed

Looking forwards to meeting you at the Joy of Bosai.

Hi guys!
Its always nice to see the dragons at work.
I salute you John for your courage to cut that branch1 as the saying goes, no guts no glory, the tree looks great.
Good idea Gerwyn, of replacing the rotten part of the base with a fresh block. I also encountered the same problem before but instead of wooden block, I used plaster of pariis, its easier to use and it will last longer, it wont rot.
Very nice juniper Jerry

Hi! Forgot to mention yesterday, did Gerwin use stainless screws?
If not the base will continue to rot cause of corrosion!

And yeah! good move on the pine, seems to be dancing now!

Jerry,
Great to see the Dragon's in action once again. I really must try and get down to your place at some point this year. You guys really inspire me to get down and dirty with my trees more often although the wife might have something to say about it Wink

Nice to see that the Noelander's raffle prize fitted the Monkey pot perfectly. Who would have thought it Twisted Evil

Keep well the Dragons & I hope to see you in Bath,

Pabling,
Thank you for posting
Good to hear from you my friend.
John as you know it a true gent. He has such a passion for the art and some great trees. Each one is being slowly refined.
Now and then John sees something or a Dragon memeber might suggest something to John. We are all open to hear others thoughts. We then as a group chew the fat and the owner can either act or delay acting, or say nah... we love to share our vision and ideas with one another.

Gerwyn used milliput an epoxy Putty
Milliput is a very hard, moldable putty that sets rock hard in an hour and is then you can carve, it will also take a stain.
Very nice juniper Jerry
Thank you.

Definitely could be arranged. Let us jnow when you are coming and I'll bring my grinder.

I put the beech group together a year ago, I wouldn't rush repotting it. I had planned to allow the trunks roots to fuse a little. Unless you plan to re-position the trunks, then forget all I said. Wink

Well said Tom, Its the workshops and freindship that realy binds these dragons together. In my more than two months stay in UK I never missed the Wednesday and Sunday events because of the workshops their warm and sincere friendship. For you guys who are only a few hundred miles from the dragons, you should try going there to feel this friendship and learn a lot of things about BONSAI.

Thats nice to know you put the group together. I love it.

I do want to move a couple of the outside ones . I have reduced the height of the group as i thought some of the branches were too thick at the top and wanted to get the whole thing a bit more compact. I hope i haven't ruined your work.
I'm going to get a slate this weekend hopefully. I have a wedding to go to next week and then hopefully i will have some space to come down, if my boy allows me Rolling Eyes Not trees again Dad is the call i hear often. Embarassed
