Need advice for collected pine
Hello. I've just recently collected this short needle pine and plan to let it rest a year or so to regain vigor. After that I'm not sure which direction I want to go in. Need some suggestions for styles and ideas. The growth is now long and spindly and I was thinking of either loop grafting long branches to themsleves or try and get backbuds by pinching candles and shortening new growth. Base is about 4" at soil line now but is buried a little deeper to encourage more surface roots so is a little larger.

Hello jferrier,
If just have collected it, as you say just leave it there as it is!
How was the root bal when you've collected?
First things first recovery.
Prior to pictures in years there is potential, first give it a rest,.....

Hello J. It's absolutely paramount that your Pine is left to recover for a couple of years. Do not work your tree unless it is making strong candle growth and at that stage, with good feeding, you can think about pruning( for back budding) and wiring (for shape). Be patient and you will have a good tree.

Sure, sure I plan to let it rest as long as it needs and not do a thing to it as far as training or pruning goes. The rootball could have been better, but was not bad. I've ordered a bottom heat pad and plan to build a heat box to warm the roots up a bit to encourage more root growth. I've got it in a 50/50 mix of the soil that was surrounding it and some 1/8-1/4" decomposed granite. I mixed in a bit of some mychorrizal fungi I found under some pine needles in the area too.
