In a new training pot, not so great but its a nice change of scenery from the nursery container its been in for 2 years. Roots still have some sorting out to be done. I will be working on ramification and a decent back branch this year. I will also complete the carving. I figured it best to take it slow while I soak longer on what the hollow should look like.

Chris (aka Chappy), This should fuel your appetite to come dig trees in March. See you then!

This will make an impressive gnarly old specimen with a few more years of development. Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing. Smile

Nice specimen. I wouldn't carve too much, maybe the scar near the bottom could be hollowed out. The natural wood texture looks good.
Is it a Cedar Elm?

Rob,
Spt on, all I have done up to this point is to remove the rotting wood. No massive carving projects here. The bark is great eh. Its actually a winged elm. We have tons of them in Oklahoma....just gotta find a place where the cows have been munching them for 20-30 years Smile

Any thoughts on a pot?

I have both Winged and Cedar elm in my collection. Neither really like the lack of a solid dormant period.

Here are some pot ideas

Cool virtual Rob! I like the 2nd pot...it would have to be a big one though!!

You are correct elm do need a solid dormant period. In Oklahoma they are the 1st to turn yellow and almost the last to bud out again.

Thanks for the ideas.
