Maillot Bonsai
Have any of our members dealt with Maillot Bonsai in France? I am very impressed with their website and am thinking of ordering a few things. If you have, I'm interested in what sort plant quality is provided, especially the quality of low grafting and size of plants. Also seed viabilty, if you purchased any.

Kev,
Didn't end up buying anything from them because of shipping issues to the states, but I received very friendly and fairly quick replies to my emails.

Hi,
We made a larger order of some rare Maple cultivars for several people here in Germany this autumn. (The person who organized it had been ordering at both Esveld and Maillot before, and had found the quality of Maillot better.) The plants are normal garden center quality wrt. size and grafting, i.e. rather thin trunks in the 4 liter pots, and normal grafting a few centimeters above the soil. There are a few images of that order here:

(Just realized that you need to be registered to see that forum - I'll send you the pictures separately ...)

Re: Maillot Bonsai
I've never ordered trees from them, but I had good feedback from friends who have.
For the seeds, I bought 100 Pinus pentaphylla seeds ansd Acer buergerianum a couple of years ago : although i had stratified them, I only had... 2 pinus in the end, and no acer at all ! This might have been due to by my bad handling of the process though, but I followed the instructions precisely (moist sand in the fridge for the number of months required, etc). This being a limited experience, I wouldn't generalize, as I said before, Maillot has a good reputation otherwise.
On the other hand, all the seeds I ordered from Semences du Puy germinated in the proportion indicated on their wensite, and they have some 1,000 varieties in their catalogue.

Hi Alain, thanks for your response. I've had similar experiences with seed, that's why I asked.
Unfortunately the seed that I am really keen to get hold of - Fagus crenata - is out of stock on Semences du Puy. It is a tree that produces seed in masting years and then doesn't produce any viable seed for several years. This can lead to people only having stocks of older dessicated seed, with lower viability and thus poor germination.
