Is it true that they have a tendency to turn up their toes (Die) for no apparent reason? I read this a few times on the internet. Or is this down to poor horticultural practice? And the last question is………Do you have an idea of this trees future design? Smile

Hi Andy

Your first pictures were taken in April 2009, and the last one (after working on it) in Jan 2007?? Is it just maybe your date setting on the camera thats wrong?

Nice progression anyway.

In reply to Fuzzy regarding the delicacy of Siberian Elms, they are as tough as old boots in the UK.

I had an allotment (for non UK members a small plot of ground hired from the local council on which to grow vegetables) in Hampshire where I planted some cuttings.....

Trouble was the roots ran riot and suckers sprung up on allotments 30 feet away, I was not popular and it did nothing to promote bonsai! Embarassed
But I got a lot of freebie rooted cuttings.
The species has a lovely bark as it matures. A good species for bonsai.

Hi Dave.
I have a large elm stump that I obtained from a tree nursery recently when I first saw the tree I recognised it as an elm and was told by the proprietor that it was a Dutch elm, but I’m not sure. Confused Normally when you trim the roots and shoots on elm they tend to bleed a slimy substance. This elm
Doesn’t and looking at the above pics the bark looks similar. Do Siberian elms bleed? Anyone got a close up of a Siberian elm leaf? PLEASE. Smile

That bottom branch bothers me, too. It is rather large, especially at its base. Maybe you'd want to consider an air layer just above that branch. Looks to me like that would create a much more typical and attractive broom -- and then, that branch could turn into a trunk for something else.

Or not. affraid

the roots of these trees ooze out loads of slime when they are cut
the thickest roots bleed the most ...........i dont know what it is or what it does...but it doesnt slow down the rooting process they grow roots like crazy

Yes this is interesting as all other elms that I’ve worked on in this past have had this tendency. When it comes into leaf I’ll post some pic and hopefully I’ll get a conformation.

Regards Very Happy
