Pasteurizing Soil
Due to a mysterious malady in my boxwoods, & possible other problems, I would like to try pasteurizing some of my soil. I have never pasteurized bonsai soil. I used to use oven roasting bags; dunno if they are even still available. I think I have a couple. What methods & temperatures would you use?

Re: Pasteurizing Soil
Keeping it at 180 for 1/2 hour should do it. I have done it in the oven spread onto sheet cake pans with foil on top.
With an instant-read thermometer as we use for making espresso drinks you can determine when it's hot enough and start timing. I have found it to take 30-45 minutes at 300F to get up to the 180 temperature with turface. If you are talking about potting soil it may take longer.

Thanks. About what I recall. Since bonsai soil is 1/3 Turface, the timing should be similar. May be easier in Central NY at 400' elevation?
