Hello

I recieved a bonsai juniper as a gift, I normally would not buy one for myself as ive always killed that type of bonsai even though im pretty sucessful with other types. I live in Colorado Springs,Colorado ZONE 5 , the tree was shipped from california so i would think has to be use to warmer temperatures then i can provide if i just left it outside. Everything i read online says not to let them freeze and there is NO way i can put it outside right now until probably MAY without a chance of that happening. So i already read keeping them inside is a death sentence as well. Plus my last juniper died inside my house i dont think the vented dry heat helped anything. So i need help to keep this little tree alive, what do i do with it? place it outside during the day as long as its not snowing/freezing? leave it inside and protected? I have a garage I could put it in but im very confused as my gargage gets pretty dang cold during the winter plus how would i give the tree light ( i have no garage windows). You guys generally do not seem like amateurs so i hope you forgive my questions. Also i would like to add ive read and read online articles and have not found anything that really explains it for my region properly. Or atleast not anything i grasp well enough to risk my tree on it .

any help appreciated. Right now the trees soil is still moist from whoever watered it before i recieved it. Ive had it about 3 days. The needles? are soft to the touch so i believe its alive at this point. The tree was ordered from a website i hope its ok to post the link so u guys can see the exact type of plant if not feel free to edit or delete the link.

Posting informative links here is fine. Thanks.

Freezing won't kill a healthy bonsai, but you don't know yet how healthy this one is, and are also right that in its very short life it probably has adapted to a warmer climate than yours.

Do you have an indoor, unheated and well lit porch you could put it in? Or a garage where you could put it under a fluorescent light with a timer (13 hours, or so).

I'll let people with more experience with really cold weather than I chip in here, but a few weeks of that kind of acclimatization might be enough to let you put it outside for all but the very coldest times. And snow will provide some insulation, also.

Greetings from Zone 5. I generally advise people in your situation to keep the plant as cold as possible, but above freezing, for the rest of the winter. If you don't have an unheated porch, spare room, etc., you can wrap the whole tree in a plastic baggie and put it in the refrigerator. When it is dormant, it doesn't need any light. I've done it. I am not sure I would recommend the garage to a complete novice, as it can be a little tricky. Next spring, assuming it survives, I would plant it in the ground for a few years to get some muscle.
