Re: desert rose
Adenium Obessums (Desert Rose) are somewhat of a succulent species and hence do not need to be watered frequently.
... at this time of year desert roses are probably watered once a month.
Is the tree in bonsai or normal soil, a pic would be nice.
Anything you ever wanted to know about 'em.

Re: desert rose
I grow quite a few desert tree like plants as bonsai. I'm not sure why they wouldn't be considered bonsai since there are plenty of shrubs we cultivate to look like trees and call them bonsai? They grow into small tree proportions in nature, and I feel that as long as we don't style them as pines and stick to what they more or less look like in nature than it's a hard argument against them. They are weird plants and that's probably why we can't get past that and see their potential, they have large trunks, interesting roots, beautiful flowers, branch back well, I've even carved and hollowed one out!
As far as yours dropping its leaves, I would recommend that unless you can guarantee summer like weather during the winter, heat+light, than stop watering completely, cold and wet equals death. They will loose all their leaves and the trunks will shrink and it may even look dead, but the trunk is designed to absorb light and hold moisture, in the spring it should be slowly brought back to life so don't over do the watering at first, let the leaves come out before you really water it. I would recommend potting it in the usual fast draining bonsai mix so that in the summer you can put it outside (acclimatize it first) and water and fertilize the hell out of it, if you treat it like a tropical rainforest plant in the summer, as long as it's hot you will be amazed at the growth you can get.
