It was 11 degrees F (6C) here at 6 a.m. (Daughter in St. Pete Beach, FL says it was 32 degrees F at her house -- on the beach; that means it was a lot colder inland. USAians should buy your oranges NOW.)

I'd settle for your 6C, Jim. Hasn't got much above freezing here in two weeks and the past two nights it has hit -9C. And snow lying on the ground here for the best part of 3 weeks has not happened since 1978.

I'm going stir crazy.

With all the severe cold all over the country I'm feeling guilty. We did get a lot of rain yesterday but it's stayed in the 40s at night and close to 50 with some sun for the last week, even tricking some trees and plants into starting to swell buds as if spring were here.

here in holland we have minus 5 at day times snow and at night it runs below -10.

And today, strong winds and snow, cant seem to get the house warm to many gaps ahhhgrrr!

For the past several days around here the high temps have been less then 6*F. Next week however there's a heat wave coming through, one day even has a chance to get above freezing.

Jim's 11F is actually -11.6C...too cold for the Carolinas!

8 F (-13.3 C) this AM just north of Hotlanta, GA. The pots have been frozen solid now for almost 2 weeks. After moving from USDA zone 6 Massachusetts this past year, everyone told me how mild the winters are here and how much I would enjoy them...yeah, right . I nearly broke my arm yesterday trying to clear my very long, steep driveway of ice and snow. Of course, I was unsuccessful and am currently marrooned at the top with my family...At least the house is warm, the fridge is full (beer included), and the NFL playoffs start today .

Can't compete with those temps...however...here, within walking distance of the river at the north end of SF Bay, it's been coooold...seems like it started around Thanksgiving. Step out the door and it's remniscent of getting out of the down sleeping bag at 11,000 feet or next to a frozen lake. Had to retrieve my winter wear which had been packed away because..."...it doesn't get that cold here...". Yeah, tell me about it. Listening to too many alarmists.

It was 4 F, -15.5 C, here last night. The rose bushes are under rose cones (Styrofoam) with a foot or so of snow on top of that. The hardy bonsai are on my sunporch, where a heater, when necessary, keeps it between 30 (-1) and 45 (7.2). My sanity is preserved by the fluorescent plant room in the basement, where my Fukien tea blooms all winter.

I was one of only 6 people out of a possible 46 who managed to get into our factory on Tuesday. Our building is sixty-odd feet high and the size of 2 soccer pitches (they used to build ships engines here) and nigh on impossible to heat. We have a major river running right alongside us and we're right in the bottom of a valley. The thermometer outside said -13, which is bad enough, but when we got inside my friend checked his iPhone temp gauge and it said -15.
We had no water, the toilets were frozen solid and to cap it all the coffee machine was on the fritz.
Having just trudged 2 miles through deep snow to get there (no buses and my usual lift couldn't get off his drive), I was less than impressed when we were told to go home.
And my hands were sore after clearing the snow off my recently collected Hawthorn and Blackthorn 'cos I forgot about the sharp bits!
Tuesday was not a good day for me.
