I didn't know that in scotland it meant "a bum burp" !

The only meaning of the word I knew so far was the one used by Alfred Hitchcock :

(narratology) A plot element or other device used to catch the audience's attention and maintain suspense, but whose exact nature has fairly little influence over the storyline (from Wiktionary).
