When I saw the first picture with all those pads getting cut off I cringed a little. Probably because I'm still having a rough time learning to care for my pines. But I think what you've done will definitely give it a better taper that it previously had. Do you plan on leaving all of that deadwood, or scale it back in the future?

1. Can't find a black pine from any of the nurseries around here that aren't some nasty variety, or too large and limbed up a few feet from the base.
2. Ordered seedlings at the wrong time of season only to have a heavy rain pull them out of the ground with the help from some dear.
3. Bought a nice potential bonsai material, kept it health all season, then tried to overwinter it by digging a hole in the ground and putting pot and all in to keep it from drying out or freezing. The melting snow ended up creating a pool because of the clay-like soil I put it in... so basically drowned it.

All in all bad timing and learning from my mistake as it was my first full year of the hobby. I've learned a lot, so hopefully moving forward I'll have a much higher success rate as I know several things not to do now Smile
