Dry River Bed In Action

Weather was gorgeous today but despite the warm temperature I still have to start repotting my Japanese Black Pines. I took a few in process shots of putting a "Dry River Bed" pot by Dale Cochoy into use.

First shot - note the mycorrhizae fruiting body on the surface (far right of the pot - looks like a black blob). I used some "PHG Treesaver" innoculant last year and it seemed to have worked very well.



This was the before pot. Not bad but kinda boring and perhaps a bit small for the tree.


Good colony in place.



Fungus growth throughout the pot - very good sign.



Here is the trademark Dale squiggles on the pot inside.



Here it is repotted but not fully wired. I will get to the wiring in January (I hope) and will post a proper portrait. Merry Christmas everyone.

Rob I hate to break it to you here but that Pot is wrong for the pine....Tell ya what...You send me the pot and I will use it on my Cedar Elm instead

Ok but what pot are you sending back to me for this tree?

I kinda like the DRB - nice and rustic - I can envision the exposed roots hanging over a dry river bed.

Hey Rob, cool pot and tree. I have to ask; was it particularly hard emotionally to do the deed? I have a Colchoy Dry River Bed oval with decorated inside, just like yours, that was purchased to match up with an old Lodgepole pine I have. I love admiring the pot all by itself and feel almost melancholy about filling it up with soil, as I won't be able to see the beautifully shaped and decorated inner surface. I suppose if the tree/pot image works, it will be worth it. Still.... Anyway, good luck and thanks for the pictures,

Super nice tree think tree too strong for your pot
My thoughts are since tree is so strong--oval does not show off the tree enough
i am quilty of underpotting at times but this match is too small
I think deeper more masculine rectangle to show the strenghts of the tree

Thanks for the comments all. I feel the dry river bed pot is actually very rustic and matches the bark and roots. It may not be masculine but it's a wizened old feminine pot then. But I will try to post a photo with a plain background and will see what virtuals you can come up with. I do think it could be a bit deeper but then I don't have one of those right now.

Luc - oops you are right. It was a typo. It's PHC Tree saver It is used extensively in farms. I had a few sample packets. I'd like to find more in a smaller package size as bonsai trees don't need that much.

Dave - not problem for me potting it up. I have many Dale pots in action. They are always happier when there is a tree in them.

TOM1NO - (would be nice to use your real name.) There really isn't much of a trick. You need to get the spores in the soil. If you use an inoculant then just water and care as normal. The only caution is if you spray fungicide cover the pot as it could damage the colony.

I'm curious to see how the DRB pots look after some time in the southern humid weather with algae, moss, etc.
