Got a couple of books which say that too much wiring will choke the sap flow and cause die back. I've done some bigger wiring on my corkbark shohin elm, and I'm now starting to do some finer wiring to perk up the ramification (see, I learned that word here Very Happy ). Is there such a thing as too much wiring? Some boffins have told me that neat wiring is purely aesthetic and not important, but then I've read that crossing stuff will choke the sap too. Opinions please?

There's probably only "too much wiring" going on if you hate it as much as I do.

If you wire so tightly that you choke the sap flow, you're wiring too danged tight.

Call me 'Mr Picky' but the best results for cork bark elm is cut and grow, and minimum wiring to correct faults from previous work.

As for too much wiring... on trees that do require lots of wiring... Junipers, Pines, yews etc. only wire to achieve the result you want and no more.

For sure there is nothing worse than a tree fully wired with 'bright' aluminum wire being shown in an exhibition... not that you (bobby) would dream of doing it I am sure.

Call me 'Mr Saddo' but there is a kind of beauty in a pine 'perfectly' wired with copper (preferably NOT in an exhibition)

And Finally... I HATE demonstrations whereby an 'artist' takes three hours to wire a tree (in silence) and 10 minutes at the end 'styling' and finally 'explaining' what he has done...

Rant over... Now off to a Gig Wink
