Little olive that got smaller Empty Little olive that got smaller

Post  leatherback Sat Jul 12, 2014 8:47 pm

Early 2012 I got a stock-standard olive from the garden-centre. What drew me was a slight bluge at the base. After spending a year looking at it, repotting it to lift the roots higher, and removing a lot of the surface roots, brinbging out a bigger part of the bulge etc. this is the image, of june 2013.

After not getting any backbudding, I decided to just go brutal and chopped the top off last summer:

And a year later, a bit of carving a light wire and some pruning, this is where I am at today..

Your little olive looks so much bigger now that you pruned off the top!

wow! Nice work! I am curious, did you shorten the stump even further from pic 2 to pic 3? In pic 3 you have a nice taper but in pic 2 you have the bulge and then the straight piece on top.
also in pic 1 I see the leaves are quite large, have they stayed small (and in proportion) as in pic 3?

Hi,

Pic 2 and 3 are rotated about 180 degrees from eachother. The bulge left on p2 is the carved bulge in p3. It was hardly reduced in height (less than 0.5 cm)

The foliage is different: The original plant seems to have a cultured olive grafted on top of wild variety.

A year later; The crown is filling out, after a dry-out scare I had over winter (Never put a plant in the window sill, and oput the heater on.. )

I love it! Tree-pot combo is great Smile
Chopping it took the tree to next step on the quality stairway.
Foliage looks very small on this one, which is nice.
Got any future plans with this one?

Hey Maarten,

Thx. Not really a furture plan. Have heard suggestions to grow it out, and create a full canopy. On the other hand.. I like the current view too.

Any suggestions?

Jelle.

It's like the previous suggestions you mentiones, but now with a face. It's kinda hard to think of new, refreshing stuff with this tree as it's kind of strongly suggesting how it wants to grow. I guess the tree pointed out a path, and now it is up to you to decide how you want to walk it.
Please let me know how you think about it! Smile

Thx for the effort. I think I will go less pompom-ie though. I have an image in mind, but not sure I will get there.

Nice going!
And the leaves are so smaller than the original. These are almost the size of sylvestris!

Like the composition. Allow tree to put out more leaves. Do not trim straight away. This way the tree gets healthier and will respond better.
