I always wanted to try styling a Pinus Contorta "Lodgepole" pine. I really like the "Taylors Sunburst" trees. In the spring as the needles emerge on the candles they are yellow. They later turn green during the summer. Here is a photo of the before and after styling of the tree. You can see more of the development of the tree on my blog Taylors Sunburst.

over the weekend i worked on a larch that is primarily one sided, but that is what the tree gave me to work with...

so i am curious about what appears to be the conscious decision to make this a one sided tree...

what led you to this direction and what do you plan for the future ?

Pinus Contorta "Taylors Sunburst" First Styling Empty Taylor Sunburst...

I visited the Website and saw the before and after pics, etc...

It seems to me that being a one sided tree it lent itself to being a Semi Cascade with the branchless side being downturned and then wiring to a slightly downturned over the pot edge...

The branches are already pointing vertical & just need some straightening out or it could be styled as a Windswept Semi Cascade...

Lot of creative potential here.

Thanks for the replies. When I purchased the tree it was pretty much well branched all the way around tree. It was planted in a bunker right next to a very large Larch. The Larch grew faster then the pine tree and shaded out one side of the tree and the branches died back on that side. I am a MS patient and at the time all of this was going on I was responsible for my mothers care. She had advance Dementia and I did not spend the time I should have on trees. I now have more time for trees after she passed away. So in this case the tree died on one side and grew at an angle all on its own. I did candle prune it and chopped the top back though. I had just started candle pruning pines. Japanese black, Mugo and this Taylors Sunburst. I had a larger one that just got to big and I gave it to the County Event Center. They were really excited to get it and planted in the landscape right in front of the building. It is going to be a great tree as it gets older. I stop by and visit it from time to time.

I like cascades of all types, I think I can cascade just about anything! Shocked AS for plans for the future, continue to work on ramification of the remaining branches. I may take off a couple more branches. I also may chop the tree way back and make it a lot smaller. I almost did that to start with, but decided to style it this way see what it looks like. I can always chop it back latter if I want. Reducing the root ball will be next in the spring.

Here is a new photo of the tree with the candles elongating and the needles emerging yellow. The needles will turn green latter this summer. Kevin I took a Scott's pine down to a work shop lead by Mauro Stemberger that was pretty much one sided. It looks pretty good right now and very pleased. Will post a photo or two latter, I had a large tumor removed and picking up something heavy right now is not recommended!! Shocked There are more photos of the tree on my web site HERE

I think I would cut it way down.
To like the bottom 2 whole of branches.
Then cut shoots (Not decandling, That's what they defending, to induce back budding.
Then work from there.
