Bruce,

one of the science sites suggested that the the town folk were intending to make utensils / furniture
out the trees, but the war [ 1 or 2?] got in the way.
Now there isn't anyone alive to say yay or nay.

Would be interesting to plot the curved and straight trees on an overhead map to see if there is a pattern to them.

i pretty much believe the most pedestrian of explanations and that being the manipulation of the young stock by craftsmen for future use that never occurred.
