A friend of mine, owns this tree but wasnt sure about the carving. I did'nt like the way the deadwood poked out to the right and the straight section of live wood underneath the right side. It also looked as if a Makita had been run up the middle, rather than natural rot. He gave me the go ahead to refine it for him. Did this work this morning. First couple of pics are how it was.Changing some carving 18082010

A couple of hours later, Its been raining all day, so the light levels are bad. Flash tends to bleach out the detail.Changing some carving Img_0526

The straight livewood was cut around to the back, allowing wood to be removed and the two spikes of deadwood at the top were shortened and the flow changed to the left.Changing some carving Img_0527

The hollow, was also made deeper and then burned with a blowtorch to remove tooling marks.Changing some carving Img_0528

Looks like another Podocarpus -- but maybe some kind of yew?

Nicely done on the carving. It had more deadwood than I care for at the beginning, but you work with what you're given. Its a very nice tree.

Looking great, Will! I know the detailing is going to add additional depth. Edited the dark pic:

So much better Will. Well done. Any chance of a pic taken from a bit back so we can see the whole tree - to get a before and after comparison with your first pic.

Size of the tree?

Well Done will
the difference is the tree is starting to look more natural rather than gouged
the good thing with these Yews are they do forgive heavy handedness.

Sorry. It is Taxus Bacatta. I've just spent an hour, removing the wire and thinning it out. Some wire had bitten in! I'm going to restyle it tomorrow, if i'm allowed!

Will

Wish I had brought the tree to you when it was mine Wink and before I passed it onto Graham. I have some early pictures of this tree when I first obtained it way back in 2005. It was a tree I purchased in 2005 and sort of left to one side and worked on other trees whilst this one sat neglected. However I did take it to Burrs 3 or may be 4 years ago to work on Very Happy

Your work is really good. If the owner of the tree wants pictures from 2005 till I parted company with the tree drop me an email and I will send them on

All the best and thanks for showing

For some reason the host an image box is'nt working. Completely blank!
Andy, I like the way trees pass from person to person, each seeing something different.Im sure the present owner would love your history of the Yew. Have wired the tree tonight, and photographed it but I can't upload it.

Hi Will. It does that from time to time and on more occasions than not, it has been a problem with servimg rather than on here. Try again later and if it stll is causing problems, give Kev a shout in a PM.

btw now that I see it against Andy, I can get a much more accurate gauge of the size of the tree, so no need to reply to my previous request.

did you use a similar technique on your big yew and elm??it must have taken ages with the scalpul as yew wood can be very hard!!did you do any carving at the bottom of the tree on the right??
