Shohin Parrot's Beak - Strange Occurence
So, I got this little shohin Parrot's Beak over the summer, it grew really well, and I re-potted it about 5 or 6 weeks ago.
Then ... it starts dropping leaves. I hadn't done much by way of root pruning, and no other major stresses occurred, but those leaves just kept dropping. After a week or two, every single leaf was gone, and the tree was totally bare.
I figured it was likely dead, but didn't give up on it (and I'm glad I didn't). I kept watering this dead little tree, and miraculously, after about 2 weeks (maybe more), I've finally got the beginnings of leaves!!! At first, just one tiny little bud emerged, and now, they're everywhere.
I don't really have a question, but figured I'd share this story. I've never had this happen to me before, but figured it was nice to share. Keep watering those trees - even the dead ones! - because you never know.

tropicals are best repotted in the summer...
sounds like yours may have just been reacting to the late season repot, followed by what i assume was moving it indoors...
thats kind of a one-two punch for trops... one in the bread-basket and one in the kisser
not enough for a knock-out but definitely put it on the ropes...
(not sure where these boxing metaphors are coming from )

Ah, thanks Kevin.
Well Gmelina on our side naturally drops all of the leaves, once a year.
My own around Christmas, and then starts over.

Very interesting that your tree's drop leaves once a year. I figured the repot did it, but it needed to happen, so I knew I was taking a chance. But I figured it might lose some leaves, but not all. At any rate, glad I kept watering it. Good lesson to learn. Although it's really that same old bonsai lesson - patience.

Jamie,
I am not sure where the British sourced the Gmelina we have, it might be South China, possibly
Sub-Tropical zone 9 [ as only the beaches of China are zone 10 ], as the zonal maps go.
BUT it grows so fast, grow and clip, directional pruning is all that needed to train this shrub.
It should have Bonsai as it's middle name.
The new shoots feature after the second or third leaves, trident maple type leaves.
I got my first plant as 2 inch cutting from a neighbor's hedge.
Still have it and many children.
Looks good leafless or full canopy.
Laters.
