I have been making a conscious effort to start naming the potter when i post a pic of a tree, whether it be here, instagram or the AAC blog...
i sometimes over look it, but i am trying...

I think that is a generally overlooked aspect of us saying "Hey - look what i did !!!"

after all, without a pot, our trees would be... well... er... um... scratch well, just a pile of substrate Razz

so, if you think of it, give the potters a shout-out !!! ThumbsUp

Kevin,

though I appreciate what you say ----------- as frame is to paintings, so pot is to tree.

The pot is is just a pot, and this is why commercial shapes work so well..

I believe you will understand when someone looks at your 10 years of effort and remarks ----
Wow, nice pot.

This is one of those situations where the potter has to understand that the pot should be tidy,
and well finished, but totally the tree's slave.
Laters.

* Plus if it is that beautiful a potted image, it goes into my curio cabinet, to be admired and
never used [ for fear of damage.]
It is now a work of Art and as such can stand on it's own.

I totally agree with you.

I can't afford buying as many "potters's pots" as I can, but when I do, like you, I try to remind people that a bonsai is a "bon" (tree) sai (tray) - or the other way round, I can't remember and don't feel like checking anyway.

Several years ago, our club hosted our "regional bonsai exhibit". It was the only time when we put labels like :

Scientific name;

Local name;

Origin of the tree: (garden center, yamadori, grown from seedling, "bonsai nursery", cutting, air-layer, etc.)

Years in cultivation by the "owner": (to cut a long story short, I think that 3 years is a minimum)

Pot ("container"): (...)

When the pot can be identified (I get most of my pots cheap, even from carboot sales from people who bought a "bonsai" from a supermarket sale and it died one or two weeks later), it's a normal tribute to the potter who contributed to a tree's appreciation.

This seems so obvious to me...

sorry Khai, but here is where i have to disagree... and i will echo Alain in doing so...
I find this endeavor to be (1+1) + (1+1)...
(art + horticulture) + (tree + vessel) = 7

BUT - if someone looks at a tree that i put 10 years into and then felt it was good enough to stick in "the contest" and the best remark is "nice pot", then it is time to find another passion.

better yet, i aim for - "great tree and i really like the pairing with the vessel"...

having said that, i will admit that i have a couplafew pots that i will be hesitant to put to use as they are stand alone works of art...

a crappy tree in a beautiful pot is still a crappy tree, no matter how American politics tries to convince us to think otherwise Razz
