Hi all,

I appreciate if anyone can identify this tree I got from a nursery. Will it be suitable to train it into an upright or rather slanting bonsai. Thank you for any answers. Tree for bonsai. Bonsai10

Hello Mano;

Your tree is certainly a species of Erythrina, often called coral trees.  Given that you are in South Africa, this is likely Erythina caffra, as it is native to your area and is commonly grown as a flowering ornamental tree in tropical areas around the world.  But please know there are many species of Erythina and I cannot guess at the specific identification of a tree this young beyond the genus.

The leaves of Erythina are large, but in time they can be reduced somewhat.  Here is a link to a web page with a photo of an Erythina bonsai, it is the third picture: http://www.fukubonsai.com/1a9a26.html.  And here is another web page which shows another Erythrina used as bonsai, the photo is about midway down the page: http://www.stonelantern.co.za/galleries/tygerberg-kai-bonsai-show-2013/#.V-RzIvArKUk.

I hope this is helpful!

Thank you for your reply David. That indeed helped. Passing on my way to work, I saw one similar tree by Legislature building and I realised this one give orange flowers and saw it also in a picture on the link you shared. I am also indeed fascinated with the photos of bonsais from Tygerberg Bonsai Kai Show. Regards.
