Brian if this seedling is as small as it appears to be then you have no trunk to chop. Embarassed You will probably get some "cute" responses. But your task with this little guy is to help him stay alive and thrive, year to year. And of course if you are like many of us you with just hope that you will live long enough to see it styled and in a bonsai pot. cheers.

Design is dependent upon options and choices.  Right now you have a tree that is two years old at most and needs to be put into better soil and left alone for at least another season.  You are going to have to have some branches before you can have a place to chop to.

Aside from that the color does not look too good and I suspect the soil is staying too wet.  I seriously doubt the tree is going to survive.  The needles look from this photo to be shriveling, a sure sign of eminent demise.

I know it is kev. I've been slacking, last time I had you resend.me the invite the link diddnt work, or you forgot to put it in the email, not sure which one it was. If youd be so kind to send it over again, I can scrounge up some time to write something about myself today. And yes this was a fun post ,i am not planning on chopping this anytime soon. It is actually a mugo cuttings I got to root for.me this summer, I potted up about 25 and this was the only one who did not die.

This interests me. This is a cutting from last summer and it did root? Can you tell us/me how you did it please.

It must be great to be as brilliant as you Alain, I don't have a clue what you are talking about. Must be a very subtle joke.

thanks Vance. I say rooted but this is just minor speculation. If I tug at the base it does not move wherr as the others browned up, dropped needles, seemed dead, and pulled out easily meaning no roots had anchored the cutting. I took about 25 of these that I had removed from other mugos during summer Pruning and potted them up this summer.. its now fall and it's still green, we'll see what happens in The spring... rooting hormone, pearlite, some gravel, and spagmoss was all I used, same approach as all other cuttings I make. 99% success with ulmus, about 30-45% with acer, same with hornbeam and damn near 100% with ligustrum. If this guy lives I'll be doing a bunch more.next summer. Oh and I provided a humidity dome over the pot as well.
