Hello,

I have been dealing with black spots on leaf edges of Ulmus Parviflora for years (all trees with this same problem, about 10). At first I thought it was antracnosis. Defoliated and sprayed with lime sulphur. The next season sprayed the trees with lime sulhpur before the buds broke and after a couple of weeks the black spots appear on the new leafs. I continued that season spraying and defoliating all leafs affected (all tree sprayed practically). The next season the same, by this time I thought it was the fertilizer. I was applying 3X dose of miracle grow every two weeks on a substrate of 80% Zeolite 20% pine bark. I thought I was burning the leafs. I repotted the trees the following season in the same mixture and applying an organic fertilizer this time. The black spots appeared again. I changed the substarte the following year thinking that the problem was the Zeolite or the bark pine. I repotted to a mix of 50% pumice 50% organic soil, the black spots appeared again this year. Now I am back of thinking that it might be antracnosis, but the pictures in the web does not look like mine, this is a photo of the progression of the black spots in my ulmus leafs:

Looking the pictures I think the problem is watering. How you water the trees? Overall with hose? And what is the position of trees? Full sun? Than I think you should water just substrat and put trees in partial shade. What the wet leaves cause is burn with "lens like" effect. Maybe I might be wrong.

When a plant is watered in direct sunlight it will only burn on a leaf with hairs to hold the water droplet above the leaf surface. Leafs with smoth surfaces will not burn. And if they do with will be on leaf surface not the edges. But that said I wonder about your watering habits. Also how strong are your roots? Many times leaf edge browning occurs dur to the roots not being able to take up enough water and nutriants.

I live in a semi desertic area in Mexico, the sun can very strong for several hours in the day. I water overall with hose. I am going to water only subtarct from now on, thank you for your advice Yamasuri!

The trees are in training pots of 1.5 gallon. When I was repoting the trees I noticed that the moisture inside the substract was very irregular, and I had just watered them before the repot. I watered them until water came out of the pot, which it is almost instantly, due to the subtract is very drainy, with two seconds of pouring water on it you could see the water starting to drain down the pot. I am thinking that I was not watering enough time so the roots can be evenly wet. Thank you for your advice Doug!
