forsythia score

Found this guys today at the home depot for $20. Not sure I've ever seen one with a trunk like this at a garden center so obviously I had to snag it up. The flowers were just starting to wilt so I chopped it down from 7 feet and now time to wait. I repotted it as well only find out the roots must have been done last year. They are all close to the base and very fine and dense. Not much for nebari but I hope that will change in the next couple years as it grows in this pot and get some branch development. Any input or advice is more than welcome thanks

500 views and nothing but here is an update anyways, i had to prune this thing a lot to keep the shoots under control. not sure what is going to stay and what is going to go, so next year i will just pinch and prune back and see what the tree tells me it wants to do... any suggestions are more than welcome

Cool. I have yet to work with forsythia, as they are around me in abundance. I'll let mothernature take care of 'em!!

Do love their yellows in spring, though. They came in really late this year, lousy spring around here as I'm sure you are well aware.

Nice deal for something at Home Depot

I would let it grow unchecked for a couple of years, lots of feeding, water and sun. Once you have many branches to choose from, hack it back hard, and wire it perhaps late summer. Don't worry about ramification but more about the first initial shape. Since it'll be healthy maybe it can go into a suitable pot that spring. So 2 years from now you'll have something wired and ready for a new pot in the spring. It'll look awesome right after you'll re-pot it too.

If it were mine, I would hack that straight section on the top and try to use the two bottom sub trunks/ branches to start something new.

... and if i'm not mistaken, the branches tend to become hollow over time and difficult to wire...

Not a bad find.........for me its all about the beautiful yellow flowers telling us that spring is here.

My experience has shown that I have to repot it every two years as the roots have completely encircled the pot and is starting to raise itself out of the pot.  I wire it in the winter and cut the wire off after the flowers have finished (before the new growth gets too far along).

I was thinking the same spot for a chop. Wiring is tricky as it gets woody quick and hollow, so I'm leaning more toward clip and grow for another summer then letting growth go after I've established some movement and selection in the lower branching. The shoots if unchecked will grow straight as an arrow and lengths of 3+feet. So I think I will try to establish some more branching and movement. Then let it grow a season or two to bulk up a little bit and chop it back hard and get it into a pot then worm kn ramification. Thanks eveyone

So maybe wire this summer then eh? I know what you mean by getting woody too fast. Try that then, let it grow unchecked to about beginning of July, cut it back much more than you would think. I'd say leaving about 3 inches 5-6cm and wiring those. Then letting it grow unchecked again through the summer and wiring the second pair (Y) coming out of those first and then repot it the following spring perhaps.

awsome tree abcd... I've read the root growrh is rather vigorous, I will take some cuttings this coming season and get them to root in small water bottles placed ontop of a regular pot filled with soil. The plan is or will be to get the roots to grow down and stay slim to the trunk so I can make some exposed root trees... Some will have to be root over rock I think as well

Update. As you can. See I cut the long straight part and decided to build of the split of the lower branches.
