Hello IBC folks,

Can someone experienced with Flowering Quince tell me when is a good time to hard prune the long whips that I am growing after I repotted the tree this March? This is a nursery material with hybrid 'Double Take' that I got this March and repotted it... since then the whips have been growing wildly.

So far the weather has been on the cooler side yet warming up. I was thinking of making the hard cuts around the first week of June.

Hey,
I'm also in Chicago area and have quite a few quince. I normally repot in the fall usually early sept. and then cut back in early spring. I cut off long extensions on mine about two weeks ago. If the tree is growing strong you could cut them back now but with a recent repot you might want to leave them through the summer to build up the strength. You will have to judge based on the overall strength of the tree. I've found hybrid quince to be pretty indestructible but you can really slow them down by overworking them. The biggest challenge I have had with them is getting them to bud where I want them to.
