tree Identification

I thought this might be a green thread cypress. But I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

my guess is Juniperus virginiana "Eastern Red Cedar"

It does have that look. But I'm quite familiar with Red Cedar, and this isn't it. Thanks, Dave!

To me it looks more like Sequoiadendron giganteum, or a variety of Cryptomeria...

Well, it's not the redwood, but after using my fantastic google-fu, it could be crypotomeria. I think I'll take it to a nursery to see it they can identify it.

If you dug it near your home, it's almost certainly eastern red cedar. Difficult bonsai subject, but can be done. Much patience will be required.

Well, the way the needles are arranged all around the stems, includidng older ones makes me think this is not a Juniper.

What's more, although being far from being a specialist, on a lot of Junipers only vigorous new shoots display pointed needles, on mature branches, they've got rounded scales, which I can't see here.

I may be wrong, but since I am interested in tree identification, you are welcome to post counter-arguments

If it's a plant from a garden center with no tag, who knows what it can be?...

I can state categorically it is not red cedar. I know red cedar, we have it everywhere here.

Actually Alain, although I don't think I said it, I dug it up out of my lawn when it was about five inches tall. I re-planted it in my rock garden and forgot about it until this year. I can't remember exactly how long ago that happened, but it wasn't long. It grew like a weed.

When you find out for sure let us know. It looks just like the gazillions of young red cedars I see all through the woods over here.
